Ch 1: introduction - Illuminati

  • intended to be association
  • hierarchies get overrun by people who are organized in networks, former or informal.
  • Networks I don’t have good records so they are seen as conspiratorial like the illuminati but in reality they are important

Ch 2: network world

  • space our world is full of more networks than ever. Network communication and technology is Outpacing regulation pushing us closer to conflict, not farther.

Ch 3: Networks, Networks Everywhere

– We are social animals. That’s how we evolved to take over the world – Until 100 years ago, we were in social networks of up to 150 in our villages.

Ch 4: Why Hierarchies?

  • hierarchies start from the clan and family and get more complicated up to nation state of empires.
  • hierarchy are more efficient way to wield power. Top down reduces conflict and time to decision-making.
  • military requirements push societies towards hierarchy. Also controlling agrarian societies push towards hierarchy for easier control of the people

Ch 5: From Seven Bridges to Six Degrees

  • The best connected people in networks are measured by the number of steps. It takes you to reach all other notes.
  • Being well connected does not mean you have more connections to other notes. It means your notes are connected to other popular connected notes.
  • Degrees of separation of people goes down as the person is more well connected to other powerful people
  • Social media has reduced the number of connections for the 6° of separation test

Ch 6: Weak Ties and Viral Ideas

  • Adding A few week ties causes the entire system to become much more interconnected even when looking for a node not much has changed
  • This means that the people with weak ties to many other groups can be the key to spreading ideas
  • These people are gatekeepers that can make or break something going viral

Ch 7: Varieties of Network

  • hierarchies are just another kind of network
  • Hierarchies are optimized such that the top note is the most connected a.k.a. the leader. Totalitarian networks are easy to break by connecting a few random notes like in network theory

Ch 8: when networks meet

  • Francis Fukuyama says that hierarchy must prevail for a stable state. Networks are too, erratic and prone to failure
  • The argument for networks is that it’s like an immune system with emergent Probabilistic decision-making based on network opinions
  • I.e. self organization into hierarchies based on ground swells of network activity are self reinforcing so (ideally) the best idea wins

Ch 9: Network Rules

  1. No man is an island
  2. birds of a feather flock together
  3. Weak ties are strong
  4. Structure determines virality
  5. Networks never sleep. They are constantly changing and can be radically altered by small perturbations
  6. Networks network
  7. The rich get richer.

Ch 10: The illuminati

 - The illuminati coincidentally The networks of enlightenment thinkers are what led to the French revolution not illuminati planning  Their secrecy makes it easy to contribute more consequence to them that is afforded

Ch 11: Hierarchies

- The state and the hierarchy are natural progressions from human nature. People stratify themselves in groups based on their individual power

  • The Roman Empire/hierarchy was Hurt by the Christian network which brought members from various classes in the Roman society into the same network

Ch12: The Network Age

    • The Black Death Killed about half of all Western Europe, causing labor shortages, and more local powers versus a large empire life room or like Byzantium the east
  • The loser non-family members of Western Europe allowed bankers and elites to begin infant capitalism
